This February Hackney Labour was excited to welcome the Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero to Hackney. In Hoxton Hall, the Secretary of State launched the biggest investment in community energy in British history. Backed by up to £1bn for local energy projects, the plan will transform community ownership across Britain. The Local Power Plan will give communities the chance to take control of their energy, giving people a stake in the places they live and generating pride, respect and local prosperity.

It was fitting that the Local Power Plan was launched in Hackney. Hackney is leading the way nationally on community energy, working with community energy partners to transform local community buildings so that they run on cheaper cleaner energy. We also have an ambitious residential solar project, where residents across 27 council-owned housing blocks have the opportunity to buy discounted energy supplied directly by solar panels on their buildings. Ed joined us in visiting one of these sites in January – watch the video of his visit here!
